Fjord IT’s Community Manager, Jan Robert Johnsen was responsible for the production of the TEDxOslo 2012 conference last week. Together with a multidisciplinary team of 13 TEDx’ers, Jan Robert has been volunteering for the last 11 months to arrange the event. This years theme was “Corporate Rebels” — a topic close to heart for everyone at Fjord IT.
When I first meet with the company Fjord IT, I was introduced to a group of right spirited people that was very innovative and had some really good ideas. This attracted me a lot and I was happy to join in this disruptive startup. But the real challenge today is to build an organization where modern leadership principles takes precedence over more
traditional principles established by the production-based industries of the last century. Fjord IT was already talking about taking on this challenge and I was thrilled to be able to help creating a company ready for the 21st. century.
Since 2004, I’ve been working on defining some new principles and tools to achieve a change in how we run our businesses. To adapt organizations to the knowledge worker, generation Y, continuous innovation and customer delight. A move from command and control to horizontal communication and self-organizing teams. – A move towards meritocracy, where the best ideas are rewarded, regardless of title or position. – To praise failure, because it is the way to great innovation — to disrupting your own products, before your competition does it — and to build agile companies that can not only survive — but thrive in the constant changing market and the fundamental shift in power in the marketplace, from the seller to the buyer.
This work has led me to tap into a huge network of likeminded people and participate in a global network of management innovators at the Management Innovation Exchange (MIX). I have meet a lot of local entrepreneurs and also been able to work with the TEDxOslo team to gather some of the thought-leaders to share these ideas through our TEDxOslo event. A lot of people are interested in the topic of rebels igniting management change, and the 400 tickets was sold out in two hours. Have a look at this years TEDxOslo talks here.
In Fjord IT we are using these ideas and principles to build an organization that is flexible and agile to withstand the challenges of todays marketplace. We are striving for a shared consciousness throughout the company about our goals and strategies to be able to gather the best ideas. We are constantly evaluating what we do and change when necessary. We must do so to be able to deliver the best customer experience at all times. The times are a changin’ — and we are loving it!
